A number of care homes in Bexhill-on-Sea in East Sussex have been awarded top marks in the local council’s newly introduced Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.

Rother District Council, which was one of the first to pilot the national scheme, awarded a five-star rating to more than ten care and rest homes in the area. A rating of five is the highest mark it is possible to get under the scheme, indicating that the facility has “very good” food hygiene standards.

The Bexhill rest homes which were investigated by Environmental Health officers and subsequently received five star ratings were:

• Elizabeth Court Care Home
• Sandhurst Rest Home
• Bupa Nursing Home in Grosvenor Park
• St Vincents Rest Home
• Rippleside Rest Home
• Greenwood Care Home
• The Hollies Care Home
• Wilton Lodge Care Home
• Orchard House Care Home
• Belle House Rest Home

The owner of the Belle House Rest Home, Jackie Brittain, said of the achievement:

“This is a really important award and I’m very, very proud.”

Along with other standards of care and health and safety, food hygiene is incredibly important within the care environment. This is why it is essential that care workers undergo the proper training in food safety.
