Borders care home nurse dismissed over lack of qualifications

A nurse working at a care home in the Scottish Borders market town of Kelso has been dismissed from her position after it was revealed that she didn’t have the required qualification.

The nurse, who worked at the Queen’s House care home, was investigated by both the Care Inspectorate and the local police. The social work department at the Scottish Borders Council was also informed of the incident.

It was found that the nurse had not undergone the right care training or had the relevant qualifications to enable her to work with patients at the home and provide them with the required standard and quality of care. The nurse was dismissed, and overall staffing at the home was described as being “weak”. In many other areas, however, Queen’s House was given excellent ratings.

Commenting on the case, which has been described as an “isolated incident, a spokesperson for the Care Inspectorate said:

“A member of staff was appointed to a position within Queen’s House for which they were not suitably qualified.

“Since care services often work with the very young, the very old and other vulnerable people, this is potentially a serious issue.

“That is why we regularly review recruitment practices in care services and take prompt action and demand improvement whenever we find failings.”
