Darlington shopping centre staff get fire safety training
Workers at a shopping centre in the County Durham town of Darlington have been given fire safety training, with the aim of improving safety standards at the mall and protecting both shoppers and staff from harm.
Around 20 staff at the Cornmill Centre, working in areas such as management, cleaning and security, underwent fire safety in the workplace training. They were taught how to identify and deal with fire hazards, as well as how to use different types of fire extinguishers to put out different types of minor fires. Fire regulations were also covered in the course, along with the precautions to take to prevent fire from breaking out in the first place.
A controlled blaze was also lit in the shopping centre’s service yard as part of the course, and the trainees were required to deal with the situation and put out the fire safely and quickly. It is hoped that through this combination of improved knowledge, fire safety awareness and practical skills for dealing with emergencies, staff at the centre will be able to increase safety in the Cornmill Centre and protect shoppers and other workers.
