It’s great to be able to offer members of staff in your restaurant, café or hotel promotions when they have shown their value to your business and to the team around them. It shows great business instinct to promote from within and it definitely reflects well on the outside reputation of your enterprise – it helps to make your company more attractive to work for and consequently boosts your recruitment policy.

However, there is one thing that you need to focus on when promoting from within: your food safety training. The fact is that the member of staff you want to promote may have a whole host of skills and limitless potential when it comes to the position you want them to take on, but they may not have the formal training to back it up.

This is something you ought to address either before you offer the promotion or immediately after it has been accepted because it helps cover your business from a legal perspective and it helps to make sure that the promoted member of the team is able to hit the ground running when they get started in their new position of responsibility.
