Food safety training: understanding the link between diet and health

If you work within the food industry, you are likely to be aware of the UK Government’s recent efforts to improve general public health and prevent unnecessary death through healthier eating and more nutritional diets.

In line with this campaign, businesses which supply food in any way (i.e. restaurants, cafes and even schools and hospitals) should be making a conscious effort to improve the nutritional content of the food they supply.

This is why more advanced food safety training is so important, particularly for those working in positions where they have any control over menu, ingredients or recipe selection. A few examples of this sort of role include food technologists, buyers and purchasers in food manufacturing jobs.

The qualification these people should aspire to attain is the CIEH Level 2 Award in Healthier Food and Special Diets. It allows course participants to gain a greater understanding of:

• Nutrition principles and terminology
• The requirements of a balanced diet
• The positive effect a balanced diet can have on health
• Why different groups of people have different dietary requirements, and the reasons for this (i.e. allergies, intolerances, lifestyle)
• Current legislation relating to nutrition and diet
