HSE calls for care home staff to receive “correct training”

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has urged care homes to ensure all staff are properly trained in all relevant areas, after one care company was prosecuted over the preventable death of a resident.

Bupa Care Homes in Leeds was fined in Wolverhampton Crown Court recently after an incident in which an elderly resident died after falling from a sling (used to move patients).

A subsequent investigation into the cause of the incident, which occurred at the company’s Bridge House Home, in the Horsworth area of Leeds, found that staff at the facility had not received the proper care training in how to safely use the sling and other similar moving and handling equipment.

An inspector for the Health and Safety Executive, Amy Kalay, has urged care home providers to ensure that all of their staff are properly trained in all specialist areas relevant to their jobs, including the safe moving and handling of residents. She said:

“Working in a care home is a specialised job, which involves dealing with vulnerable people.

“Care homes must ensure that they have the correct training in place for all their employees.”
