The celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, best known for his River Cottage series of TV programmes, has signed up to promote a brand new fire safety campaign.

Fearnley-Whittingstall was prompted to team with local firefighters after a fire broke out in the kitchen of his 400-year-old barn in Axminster last February. The blaze ripped its way through the kitchen and required 80 firefighters in 8 fire engines to eventually extinguish it. The fire was not treated as suspicious and there were no injuries to staff or members of the public.

The well-known TV chef and his River Cottage team have now teamed up with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service to produce a recipe booklet to promote fire safety. A spokesperson for the fire service said of River Cottage:

“They have always taken their responsibilities with regards to fire safety seriously and the incident has led to them working with us to help promote our summer fire safety messages in a recipe booklet where we have shared our top tips for a fun and safe barbecue.”

The best way for businesses to improve fire safety and prevent minor and major fire incidents is to implement a full programme of fire safety training for all management and staff.
