The owners and manager of Bowland Lodge care home in Newcastle has been fined more than £20,000 after admitting breaching a number of rules relating to fire safety in care homes. The charges against Tirsul Ltd, the company which owns Bowland Lodge, were brought by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service following a fire at the residential care home in 2009. Brentwood hospital kitchen staff given top food hygiene rating

The chefs and other kitchen staff at a hospital in Brentwood, Essex, have been awarded a top food hygiene rating by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) following a recent visit. Spire Hartswood Hospital’s kitchen staff and eating areas were scored a total of five, the highest mark available, in the FSA’s food hygiene rating system. A care home in Gloucester has been closed by officers from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), who stated that they had “major concerns” about the standard of care at the facility. The Uplands Nursing and Residential Home in Maisemore was inspected by the CQC in November 2010 after an elderly resident died in hospital the month before. A sausage-making company from Brighton has been fined more than £9,000 after a teenage trainee suffered an accident due to insufficient supervision and safety measures. The company, Malpass Direct Ltd, was fined after a 16-year-old working at Brighton Meat Market trapped his arm in a mincing machine and suffered severe injuries. A popular family pub in Kingswood upon Hull in Yorkshire has been rated as being ‘very poor’ by food hygiene inspectors from the city council. Hull City Council’s environmental health team gave the rating after visiting The Oyster Catcher and finding its food hygiene standards to be amongst the very lowest in the country.
