Popular Hull pub rated ‘very poor’ by food hygiene inspectors

A popular family pub in Kingswood upon Hull in Yorkshire has been rated as being ‘very poor’ by food hygiene inspectors from the city council.

Hull City Council’s environmental health team gave the rating after visiting The Oyster Catcher and finding its food hygiene standards to be amongst the very lowest in the country. The pub scored just five per cent in an inspection of food preparation and kitchen areas.

The council is now said to be considering either closing the business or enforcing a hygiene improvement notice in order to protect members of the public.

The owners of the The Oyster Catcher, however, have stated that “immediate action” is being taken to improve standards at the pub. Paul Cutsforth, the operations director of the Orchid Group, said:

“We have taken immediate action. The managers are not in the business, I am personally overseeing the implementation of regular food safety audits and all food staff are being retrained in Food Hygiene Level 2 over the next two weeks.

“I can assure customers standards at the Oyster Catcher have significantly improved and we look forward to the next environmental health visit when the score will dramatically increase.”
