According to a report in the Shropshire star, a host of businesses and food-serving premises within the Shropshire area have been awarded a five-star rating in recent weeks as part of the council’s Food Hygiene Scheme.

Amongst the businesses and premises which the council has deemed to be excelling at food safety training and hygiene are schools, colleges, cafes, restaurants, shops and other food businesses. The list of five-star establishments named in the last few months includes:

• Harlescott Junior School
• Red Rose Restaurant in Oswestry
• Philpotts in Shrewsbury
• Cruckton Hall School
• Hope House Children’s Hospice in Morda
• The Dog in The Lane in Astley
• Bowketts Food Emporium in Cleobury Mortimer
• The Green Café in Ludlow

The Food Hygiene Scheme was launched by Shropshire Council back in June 2010 and has since rated more than 2,000 food-serving premises in the county. Although it mirrors similar schemes set up by council’s up and down the country, it was one of the first to partner with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to ensure consistent inspections and ratings.

Shopshire Councillor Steve Charmley commented on the latest results, saying:

“I would like to congratulate all the businesses that have been awarded the top rating and urge people to check the rating online, in advance, or look out for the distinctive green and black food hygiene rating stickers and certificates when visiting premises.”
