Takeaway owner admits breaching food safety laws

The owner of a takeaway in Weston-Super-Mare has admitted breaching food safety regulations, resulting in him being handed a large fine by the courts.

28-year-old Kawa Abdullah, the owner of Best Kebab and Pizza, was prosecuted after the takeaway was linked to a case of food poisoning. Environmental health officers from North Somerset Council investigated the issue, and during inspections found a number of worrying food hygiene breaches at the takeaway. Issues included:

• Failure to effectively clean equipment
• Lack of washing facilities
• Storing cleaning products in areas where food was prepared
• Failure to protect food from contamination
• Failure to ensure food handlers and staff members had the correct food hygiene training

Mr Abdullah also failed to register his business with the council, meaning it was operating illegally.

After pleading guilty to a total of eight food hygiene breaches, the takeaway owner was ordered to pay £125 per offence, as well as £1,000 in court costs.

After he was prosecuted, however, Mr Abdullah is understood to have made the required improvements to food hygiene training and standards within his business. Prosecutor Helen Blundell said:

“The current situation is completely different. This is a business which has changed its approach to food hygiene.

“We are very happy with what Mr Abdullah has done.”
