The FSA’s Food Hygiene Rating Scheme reaches South Lakeland

The nationwide rolling out of the Food Standards Agency’s new Food Hygiene Rating Scheme has reached South Lakeland and Eden, continuing the FSA’s aim to establish a system that can be used and recognised whatever the county.

The goal of the scheme is clear: to reduce the number of cases of food poisoning or food-borne illness. This will be achieved in a number of ways:

• Businesses will be assessed on a number of aspects of food hygiene including food handling, cleanliness, the layout and lighting and ventilation of food preparation premises, as well as the procedures put in place to manage food safety.

• Each aspect inspected will be awarded a score between 0 and 5, with the inspection results to be clearly displayed for the benefit of customers.

It is clearly in a business’ best interests to score as highly as possible, as shown by the comments of South Lakeland District Council’s public health and licensing manager:

“The ratings will give consumers a glimpse of what is going on in the kitchen when they eat out, or behind the scenes at the places where they shop before they make their decision about where they prefer to visit.”

Make sure you would be proud to show off your food hygiene scores by providing your employees with the relevant food safety training!
