The role of the fire marshal

Posted: April 8th, 2012 by Craig comment-icon Comments disabled

Fire marshals or wardens play a vital role in ensuring safety in the workplace. Reporting to the fire safety manager, the marshal is responsible for a number of tasks:

• Identifying fire hazards in the workplace, recording them and reporting back to the fire safety manager. An assessment needs to take place each time there is change in working practices.

• Checking that fire escape routes are operational and remain open and uncluttered.

• Taking appropriate action if the fire alarm is sounded.

For many, offering to take on the role of fire warden may seem like an easy way to improve the look of their CV, and yet this does the role a great disservice. The actions of fire marshals in the event of a fire can have a direct impact on the lives of their colleagues, and it is a responsibility that should be taken seriously.

Employees often find that fire safety training is more interesting than they expected, and that the knowledge and skills they acquire have an application that extends beyond the confines of the workplace, as well as ensuring that the business fulfils their obligations in compliance with the regulations.
