Working with food safely

The frequency with which food businesses are prosecuted for failing to follow even the most fundamental food hygiene rules, goes to show just how important food safety training and procedures are.

They also illustrate how important it is never to take it for granted that members of staff understand the importance of food hygiene or how to maintain it. It is essential to make sure that even those who work in relatively low risk positions have received adequate training and fully understand the importance of hygiene standards.

As well as training, businesses need to implement procedures that check rules are being followed and standards adhered to. Setting up such protocols and procedures is covered by food safety courses, although information can also be found through the Food Safety Agency.

Make sure your employees are reminded regularly about the importance of good hygiene by providing them with information on how they should dress when handling food, how and when they should wash their hands, and what they should not do while preparing food.

Never assume that your employees know what to do and how to behave; ensuring they know and comply with standards will reduce the risks of your business becoming the source of a food poisoning outbreak.
