The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is a piece of legislation governing fire safety in workplaces, business and organisations. The FSO replaced more than 70 other fire safety laws when it was introduced in October 2006.
The FSO places the onus on the individual to take responsibility for fire safety, in the form of carrying out risk assessments and removing hazards.
This legislation applies to you if you are:
– A business owner or someone responsible for a business premises
– An employer
– Responsible for a premises in which part of it solely used for business
– A contractor with any control over premises
– A voluntary organisation or a charity
– A hotel owner, or proprietor of accommodation which has paying guests
This means that if you own or run non-domestic premises, be it a shop, office, factory or even a care home, you have a responsibility to take steps to prevent fire. This means you must carry out a risk assessment, fit fire alarms, fire doors and emergency exits, and ensure all potential fire hazards are dealt with.
All of these measures are generally covered as part of a basic fire awareness training course, so it can be a good idea to undertake one to equip yourself with the right information.
