Pizza takeway owner receives fine and community service

The former owner of a pizza restaurant in Stockton has been ordered to pay a fine of £350 and complete a community order of 160 hours unpaid work because an inspection found his premises to be dirty.

The former owner was prosecuted for four breaches of food hygiene regulations, including:

• Failing to maintain food premises clean and in a good condition
• Failing to keep food equipment clean
• Failing to provide materials for cleaning hands
• Failing to implement a food safety management system

When the hygiene officer visited the premises, he found that doors, walls, floors, door frames and areas behind and underneath equipment were covered with food and dirt.

Dirty food premises represent a very real danger to the public, and food hygiene regulations exist to protect the health of the public and reduce the risks they are exposed to. Anyone working in a business that prepares or serves food products must be aware of these regulations and comply with them.

Those working in a supervisory role should take the relevant food safety training that covers how to elaborate and then implement a food safety management system.
